To All Interested Detroit Area Sailboat Racers,

 

With the implementation of the IRC rating system for DRYA Saturday racing the time spent determining local PHRF ratings has been reduced while the process remains intact. We still maintain a very accurate PHRF handicapping system for Southeastern Michigan.

 

Last year we reduced the time spent by the DRYA Handicap Review Board (HRB) by about 50% and this year I believe we can reduce it even further and not take away from the process, thus giving the Customer (our DRYA members and Clubs) meaningful and accurate PHRF ratings.

 

As a Board we do spend time together in discussion and deliberation. Our effort has been greatly improved via electronic e-mail and the Intranet. Discussion, agreement and disagreement can be accomplished in seconds vs. days and months as in the past.

 

PHRF rating changes are made in small increments from 3 to 6 seconds/nm. 9 to 15 second changes are very rare if non-existent.

 

Racing results are the primary source for decision making although many other variables are considered i.e. rig configuration, sails, boat changes, crew, weight, etc. For accurate and meaningful rating considerations, one’s race record is most important. The more you race the better the results.

 

Any IRC rating questions, concerns should be directed to our local area DRYA Handicap IRC/PHRF Fleet Captain Maynard Rupp, US Sailing and/or RORC. We, the DRYA HRB, do not administer any IRC ratings locally.

 

I report monthly to the DRYA Executive Committee and receive any necessary direction from them as required.

 

The attached overview is directed to all interested Detroit Area sailboat racers, members of the DRYA and it’s member Clubs.
